Wayne lives with many voices inside his head and occasionally one escapes to make a point or tell a joke. It helps that these voices seem to come from other characters than Wayne. There's Wingnut, the wacky stunt pilot who has flown a little too high too many times, Chico the wisecracking chihuahua and a pillow who tells bedtime stories (that no one sleeps through).
